Takezo, Japan's best fencer, returns to Kyoto after a long period of travel. Otsu eagerly awaits his arrival, but he has not come for her, but rather to face off against the head of the region's best fencing school. As a way to demonstrate his bravery and competence, he purposely walks into ambushes set up by the followers of the school. Aiming for him, Akemi is waiting for Otsu while Otsu waits. Meanwhile, Sasaki Kojiro, a promising young fighter who believes he can dethrone Takezo, keeps a close eye on him. In the wake of his victory over Kyoto, Takezo confesses his feelings for Otsu, but in a way that both degrades them. He heads off on his own once more.
