The Soviet space station Salyut 7 was in an unmanned orbit above Earth. It abruptly ceases to respond to signals from Ground Control. The destruction of this station, which is the glory of Soviet science and space technology, would not only harm the country's image, but also cause tragedy, most likely resulting in deaths. Astronauts must be dispatched to the station in order to determine the reason of the malfunction and avoid disaster. Nobody has ever docked an uncontrollable object in space, however. This is still the most technically difficult mission in the history of space travel.
