Rosewater
Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist, covered Iran's turbulent elections for Newsweek in 2009. As one of the country's few reporters with access to US media, he appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in a pre-recorded interview with comedian Jason Jones. The interview was intended as parody, but if the Tehran authorities understood the joke, they didn't appreciate it, and Bahari was swiftly evicted from his family home and thrown in prison. In his directorial debut, Jon Stewart tells the story of Bahari's months-long imprisonment and interrogation in this potent and affecting docudrama featuring a potent and performance by Gael Garca Bernal depicting Bahari's efforts to maintain his hope and his sanity in the face of isolation and persecution-through memories of his family, recollections of the music he loves, and thoughts of his wife and unborn child.
