In the admissions office at Columbia University's School of the Arts, Louise Harrington (Linney) works. She is 39 years old and has been divorced for nine years. After getting an application from F. Scott Feinstadt, the same name as her high school sweetheart who died in a car accident. She calls the student to set up a meeting. A young artist who looks like her former love, acts like her old love, and paints like her old love looks a lot like him. She thinks the young artist might be the reincarnation of her old flame. Hours after meeting, they start having sex. Peter, Louise's ex-husband and her brother Sammy, her best friend, are also complicating her life. Sammy is a bad boy who is adored by their mother even though he isn't the best.
