Frank Capra tells Damon Runyon's beautiful and hilarious fable. Apple, boozy and brassy Annie, a beggar with an apple basket, is as much a part of downtown New York as the original Broadway. Dave the Dude, a bootlegger, is a sucker for her apples, believing they bring him luck. But Dave and girlfriend Queenie Martin will need a lot more than luck when it becomes clear that Annie is in a pickle and only they can help: Annie's daughter Louise, who has spent her entire life in a Spanish convent, is traveling to America with a Count and his son. Louise, who believes her mother is a member of New York society, wants to marry the count's son. Dave and Queenie, together with their Runyonesque henchmen, are tasked with the task of transforming Annie into a lady and convincing the Count and his son that they are socializing with New York's elite.
