Constance McKenzie, a shopkeeper in the ostensibly respectable New England village of Peyton Place, attempts to atone for a previous indiscretion that resulted in the birth of her illegitimate daughter Allison by adopting a chaste, prudish attitude toward all things sexual. Despite herself, Constance is smitten with beautiful new teacher Michael Rossi.
