After decades of hard work as a shipbuilder in Glasgow, Frank Redmond, a no-nonsense 55-year-old working-class guy, is unexpectedly laid off. He is without a work or a sense of direction for the first time in his life, and he is too proud to ask for help. Frank's best friends - the rascally Danny, the timid Norman, and the cynical Eddie - are always there for him, but he still feels completely alone. Frank is inspired to take on a new task by Danny's offhand comment. Even as he contemplates his relationship with loving wife Joan and all-but-estranged son Rob, Frank is determined to strengthen his own sense of self-worth. Swimmable water will be his goal as he attempts the nearly impossible.
