Pablo Neruda, a prominent Communist Senator and popular poet, accuses the government of betraying the Party in Congress and is stripped of parliamentary immunity by President González Videla. Inspector scar Peluchonneau is ordered by the Chief of Investigative Police to arrest the poet. Neruda and his wife, painter Delia del Carril, attempt to flee the country, but are forced to go underground.
