Based on the book by André Carl van der Merwe, Moffie (a derogatory term for a gay man in Afrikaans) tells the story of Nicholas van der Swart, who knows from a very young age that he is different. No matter how hard he tries, he can't live up to the image of a tough guy that his family and his heritage have of him. At the age of 19, he is forced to join the South African army, where a system that is almost over but still in full force offends him in every way. This is a long overdue story about the emotional and physical pain that many young men went through during the South African border war against communism. It takes place during that time.
