His corn crop is being eaten by crows and not getting enough water; his bank is about to close his mortgage; he doesn't have enough money for a new water pump or seeds, and his marriage is in trouble because his wife Mary is giving too much attention to her friend Tommy. In the barn, John finds a scary scarecrow by accident. His son, Michael, wants him to get rid of the scarecrow. However, Jude Weatherby, John's neighbor, comes over and gives him a six-pack of beer. He also convinces John to put the scarecrow in the corn field. Out of the blue, John's life changes. The crows die; the pump works again, irrigating the land; and the banker who closed the bank had an accident and died. Even so, he thinks that something bad is living on his land, and it is putting his family in danger.
