A professor of literature at the University of Lausanne, Marc, is in his forties and works there. He's still single and living with his sister Marianne in a vast, remote chalet they acquired when they were very young, but he's having a string of affairs with his students. As winter nears its close, one of his brightest students, Barbara, mysteriously vanishes from his life. Marc encounters Barbara's mother, Anna, two days later, and she wants to know more about her daughter, who has mysteriously disappeared.
