In New York, Big Steve Halloway is a gambler and the owner of the Horseshoe Cabaret, where his girlfriend, Bangles Carson, sings. He is in desperate need of money, and he needs your help. His fellow bookies, especially Sorrowful Jones, each pay him $1,000 for his racehorse, Dream Prince, to lose so he can keep the money. A gambler who has lost $500 wants to bet $20 but can't come up with the money. Sorrowful meets him. The bookie refers to this as a "marker." Instead, he puts his daughter, Marthy Jane (Shirley Temple), in charge of security. Having lost his bet, he kills himself, leaving "little Miss Marker" in the care of Sorrowful Jones, who is sad. During Steve's time in Chicago, he trusts Sorrowful to look after Bangles while he's away. At the same time, the "gold digger" helps the "tight-wod" with his problems, which makes Sorrowful a "gold digger." When Big Steve finds out that Bangles is involved with Sorrowful, he goes back to New York to do something about it,
