Jonas Nightengale is a phony Christian faith healer who travels over America hosting revival meetings and performing'miracles' with his retinue. Somebody in Rustwater needs rain to save their crops. Jonas decides to conduct a revival meeting in town while waiting for parts. The town's sheriff, Will Braverman, is dubious and works to protect his citizens. Boyd, a crippled local, feels Jonas can help him walk again. Events in Rustwater cause Jonas to question his faith.
