When his brother goes missing, mentally challenged Langston Bellows (Gbenga Akinnagbe) is left alone in Brooklyn's housing projects with no one to turn to. Langston is now under the authority of his cruel mother (Alfre Woodard), and he must decide how he will live the rest of his life. He sets out to discover the one doctor he feels can treat him, a celebrity magazine columnist who promotes dubious prescription medicine concoctions. He succeeds in his mission. The possibility of becoming "mentally excellent" will necessitate Langston's relocation to a separate apartment with his lover, who may or may not be a product of Langston's wishful thinking as well. When the hunt for his mystery doctor and hero lands him in the unethical world of pharmaceutical marketing, he discovers some unsettling things about himself. When it comes to his previous life, Langston tries for independence from his mother, from his neighborhood, and from his fragmented psyche - all while realizing that everyone around him is not who they appear to be.
