On a lonely country road one evening, Hammer picks up Christina, an attractive hitchhiker who has escaped from the adjacent asylum for the insane. They are ambushed by thugs, who cause his car to crash. When Hammer regains a level of consciousness, he hears Christina being tortured to death. Hammer resolves to pursue the case out of vengeance and in the belief that "something enormous" is behind it all.
