This is the first of a three-part biography of Czar Ivan Grozny by Sergei Eisenstein, which was never finished due to producer unhappiness with Eisenstein's attempts to use forbidden experimental filming techniques and significant cost overruns. After Eisenstein's death and a change of heart in the USSR government regarding his work, the second part was finished but not released for a decade; filming on the third part was only just getting started when it was stopped entirely. Aristocrats and even some of his closest allies betray Ivan in this first installment, which takes place during the early stages of his reign.
