It Was a Faint Dream
The story is set in 13th-century Kyoto, when the Imperial court is ruled by the clergy. Shijo was a peasant girl sold as a concubine to a powerful daima. She begins an affair with a State Councillor and the brother of a retired Emperor after becoming bored with her life in isolation. Recognizing that she is merely a courtesan's toy, she becomes a nun and travels throughout the country.
