The plot of the narrative takes place in a desolate mining town close to Valencienne in the north of France, and it follows the efforts of one man to bring life to his formerly thriving community and the people who live there. In a town devastated by unemployment, Philippe Torreton, who won a César for his performance in Capitaine Conan, plays Daniel, the headteacher of a nursery school. Daniel is determined to bring life to the village despite the overwhelming odds against him. Daniel chooses to take the law into his own hands when a parent who has come to pick up her children collapses at the school grounds due to alcohol addiction and social services refuse to aid. In spite of the opposition he encounters from the citizens of the town, it appears that his efforts will not be in vain in the long run.
