Despite the fact that Samantha Hughes was born in Kentucky, she never met her father, who was killed in Vietnam before she was born there. Samantha's uncle Emmett, who served in Vietnam as well, is her primary caregiver. To pass the time, Emmett hangs out with three other Vietnam veterans, Tom, Earl and Pete, all of whom, like Emmett, are dealing with issues that are related to their service in the military.
