After one of Atti's cunning plans backfires and gets him into trouble with Emperor Nero, the young Roman is coerced into serving in the Roman army. He is exiled to "miserable, chilly, damp Britain," where "the inhabitants are revolting — quite literally." When Atti is taken captive by Orla, a feisty teenage Celt who is eager to demonstrate her mettle as a warrior, the situation quickly deteriorates from bad to worse. After nearly escaping a very sticky death in a bog, Atti utilizes his Roman knowledge to assist Orla in rescuing her grandmother, who has been kidnapped by an opposing tribe. While everything is going on, Nero is enraged and intent on putting down the uprising that is being led by Boudicca, the Queen of the Iceni. When Atti catches up with the rest of his Roman men, he learns that they are getting ready for a historic confrontation with the Celts at the Battle of Watling Street.
