Harlan County U.S.A.
These miners went on strike against the Brookside Mine owned by Eastover Mining in June, 1973. This film shows how they did this. When the miners joined the United Mine Workers of America, Eastover refused to sign a contract. This led to the strike, which lasted more than a year and saw violent clashes between armed company thugs and the miners and their supporters. It helps us understand the strike by giving us some background on the history of miners and the history of the UMWA.
