A mysterious Dark Horseman is slaying young girls in the vicinity of the town of Dikanka, and he has already killed 11 young women. In charge of the inquiry is Nikolai Gogol, a scribe from Saint Petersburg. However, the closer he comes to solving the case, he begins to experience violent fits that cause grotesque images. His confidence in his ability to protect Liza and stop the murderer is shaken when he discovers that the next victim is his lover. Fortunately, he comes into someone who can assist him: Khoma Brut, the witch hunter who also happens to be a martial artist and philosopher. They spend three horrific nights in an old church, reading the funeral service for Ulyana, the witch, and summoning the ghastly evil ghost Viy, who appears to them while they read the service.
