Despite the absence of visible connections, Siberia and Tokyo are connected by a robust model industry. GIRL MODEL follows two protagonists involved in this industry: Ashley, a deeply ambivalent model scout who searches the Siberian countryside for fresh faces to send to the Japanese market, and one of her discoveries, Nadya, a thirteen-year-old plucked from the Siberian countryside and dropped into the heart of Tokyo with the promise of a lucrative career. After Ashley's initial encounter with Nadya, the two rarely cross paths again, although their stories are intricately linked. Nadya's ambitions of rescuing her family from their financial woes conflict with Ashley's more pessimistic view of the industry's corrosive influence as Nadya's optimism rises.
