Jamie Graham, a wealthy Englishman, is living in Shanghai when the Japanese invade and imprison all Westerners. Jamie is imprisoned alongside an American sailor named Basie, who keeps an eye out for him while they are in the camp together. Jamie retains his dignity and youthful spirits despite being separated from his parents and in a terrible situation, serving as a light of hope for the others taken captive with him.
