The year is 1961 in New York. As part of a diplomatic trip to the United States, Alexander Ivanov, a high-ranking Soviet bureaucrat, grudgingly defectes to the West, grieving over not knowing what happened to his wife Katya, whom he has been forced to leave in Moscow.
