Descendant
Beyond the written word, history exists. Africatown residents in Mobile, Alabama, have been telling each other origin tales for many decades. The Clotilda, the last surviving illegal slave ship, carried their forefathers in1860, when they formed the settlement. The ship was deliberately scuttled upon arrival, but its memories and legacy were not. Now that the Clotilda's remains have been found, the community has a concrete connection to its forebears and proof of a past that many have worked to conceal.
