A young woman named Anne, whose mother was suspected of being a witch, feels sympathy for an elderly woman named Marte, who is accused of witchcraft in a Danish village in the early 1600s. Pastor Absalon, Anne's older but compassionate husband, saved her mother by his intervention, but now, spurred on by his overbearing mother, he refuses to aid Marte. It's only a matter of time before Absalon's son returns home and falls for Anne.
