After being assigned to mentor up-and-coming Czech pilot Karel Vojtisek, Lieutenant Franta Slama and the young man quickly become close friends. To avoid being enslaved, they go to England with other Czech refugees, where they become members of the Royal Air Force. Karel crashes in England while on a mission and ends up in Susan's farmhouse, where she lives with her young husband, who is in the Navy. Karel is smitten with Susan right once, but after a brief romance, Susan decides she prefers the company of Franta, who is much older and more experienced. Franta and Karel are fighting to keep their friendship afloat in the face of their growing romantic attraction.
