Three friends get together and bury a box, with the agreement that they will open it at midnight on the night of their high school graduation. Things quickly begin to shift in the small Georgia town where they reside. One is a tiny miss perfect, another is a prom queen who is engaged, and the third is a pregnant outcast. They open the box on the night of graduation and begin a chat with one another. All of a sudden, someone brings up the subject of her going to Los Angeles to audition for a record contract. They all come to the conclusion that they should go together and they depart. They set out on the road with a man named Ben, who they met along the way. When one of them spreads a story that he might be a homicidal maniac, the rest of the group becomes terrified of him. In Los Angeles, Lucy falls in love with Ben, despite her father's requests that she not stay and instead go to an audition with him.
