Sally Hyde (Jane Fonda), the wife of a Marine serving in Vietnam, decides to volunteer at a local veterans hospital to occupy her time. There, she meets Luke Martin (Jon Voight), a dissatisfied, wheelchair-bound veteran who has been disillusioned with the battle and has gotten frustrated with his handicap. Sally and Luke quickly form a romantic relationship, but when Sally's husband, Bob (Bruce Dern), arrives suddenly, she must choose between remaining with him and pursuing Luke.
