Mrs. Kamp's tragic death has left the Kamp family trying to make ends meet in the depths of the Great Depression. Little Ruthie, whose mother has passed away and whose father is drowning in medical bills as a result of her brother's polio, is preparing for yet another Christmas without gifts or celebrations.
