Sgt. Major John Frost returns home from his most recent deployment a month early, and he is delighted to be able to spend Christmas with his family. He discovers that his wife, Jill, and son Jimmy are far too busy to offer him the warm greeting he had hoped for, and that they have adopted a puppy - a small dog named Charlie - to keep them company. John finds refuge with his other veterans at the Moose Lodge until Charlie comes across Hank, a Vietnam veteran who is homeless and has suffered a heart attack. Hank is taken care of by Charlie. As he rallies friends, family, and the community to build a new house for the vets, John discovers his calling. He hopes to provide them with a warm Christmas Eve and a fresh start in civilian life.
