An officer in the U.S. Army is recruited by the future state of Israel, which does not yet exist, to assist establish an army. This unexpected focus on his Jewish heritage has unnerved him. Israel's Arab neighbors have all threatened to invade the unprepared state as soon as division is agreed upon. Just before the start of the conflict, he is named the leader of the Israeli forces.
