DeeDee returns to her hometown with her 11-year-old son, Trooper, 13 years after she ran away with her boyfriend and left her family and friends behind. He and his wife Lydia work as veterinarians in the town where she grew up with her best friend Sam. Sam is now married to Lydia, and they have two children. Sam informs Lydia that they were childhood best friends and that DeeDee was Sam's first crush, which makes Lydia a little skeptical about DeeDee. In spite of this, with their charming helpfulness and camaraderie, DeeDee and Trooper win the hearts of many people in the community. DeeDee establishes a candle-making company in the town square and invites many of the ladies of the town to monthly candle-making parties, where she and Lydia become fast friends as a result of their shared love of candles. DeeDee tells Sam one evening after dinner with Lydia and Sam that she is very ill and that she does not have much longer to live. She asks for his assistance in finding a suitable family in town to adopt Trooper. Following this, Sam informs Lydia of what has transpired, and the two of them decide to adopt Trooper if and when something happens to DeeDee.
