The story of idealistic young playwright David Shayne is told in this film, which is set in 1920s New York City. Julian Marx ultimately gets gangster Nick Valenti to bankroll the project. The issue is that Olive Neal, Nick's lady friend, is cast as a psychiatrist, and Olive is a bimbo who could never pass for a doctor while also being a terrible actress. Accepting this first sacrifice is the first step in Broadway's thorough seduction of David, who has been neglecting his long-time girlfriend Ellen. Meanwhile, David has to deal with Warner Purcell, the overeating leading guy, Helen Sinclair, the grand dame who wants her role glammed up, and Cheech, Olive's interfering hitman/bodyguard. The playwright will eventually have to choose between art and life.
