As a single professional woman working in a Manhattan boutique hotel, Nora Wilder (Parker Posey) is known for her great customer service skills, but she is lacking in the romantic department. Whenever her loving and domineering mother (Gena Rowlands) is unable to set her up with a suitable match, she has her friend's (Drea de Matteo) terrible blind dates to fall back on as a backup source of further disappointment. The film follows Nora as she is surrounded by friends who are all happily engaged or romantically connected, but love manages to elude her — until she meets an eccentric Frenchman (Melvil Poupaud) who assists her in discovering life beyond her self-imposed limitations.
