During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captured U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Powers was given a 10-year prison sentence, and the only person who can help him get out is a New York lawyer named James Donovan, who was hired by a CIA agent to negotiate his release. Donovan gets on a plane to Berlin, where he hopes a prisoner exchange will free the young man. If everything goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel, the spy that Donovan defended in court and was found guilty of being.
