The film focuses on half-brothers Paco and Cruz, as well as their bi-racial cousin Miklo, and is based on the true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca. It begins in 1972, with the three members of an East L.A. gang known as the "Vatos Locos," and the story focuses on how a violent crime and the influence of narcotics change their lives. Miklo is imprisoned and sent to San Quentin, where he creates a "home" for himself. Cruz develops into an exceptional artist, but a heroin addiction destroys him with tragic results. Paco becomes a cop and a foe to his "carnal," Miklo.
