Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla, who live on Prince Edward Island around the turn of the twentieth century, decide to take in an orphan child as agricultural assistance. A rude awakening occurs when they are erroneously sent a girl, Anne Shirley, as a replacement for the intended male recipient.
