Based on the best-selling memoirs by Irish expatriate Frank McCourt, Angela's Ashes depicts the struggles of young Frankie and his family to overcome the endemic poverty of pre-war Limerick's slums. The film begins with the family in Brooklyn, but after the death of one of Frankie's siblings, they return home to discover that the situation has only deteriorated. Even though Frankie's Northern Irish father fought for the IRA, prejudice towards him makes it difficult for him to get work in the Republic, and when he does, he spends the money on alcohol.
