While on vacation in the Alps by himself, Francis Ashby, a senior don at Oxford University, crosses paths with vacationing Americans Caroline and her partner Elinor, a blooming Irish-American child whom Caroline had adopted many years earlier. Ashby discovers that he enjoys being in their company, especially Elinor's, and he notices that both of the women are attracted to him. Even so, he is taken aback when they show up unannounced at Oxford, where he is currently studying. It is strictly prohibited for women to enter the College premises, let alone any of the rooms. In point of fact, the respectable Fellows frown upon any kind of relationship, regardless of how harmless it may be.
