During the process of writing an article about the United States, Philip Winter gets stuck. To book a flight, he meets a German woman and her nine-year-old daughter, Alice, who are also trying to do the same thing. In the end, the three become friends almost out of necessity. When the mother asks Winter to look after Alice for a short time, it quickly becomes clear that Alice will be Winter's responsibility for a longer time than he thought. Following their trip back to Europe, Winter and Alice's friendship grows as they travel together through different European cities in search of Alice's grandmother.
