The 1975 film "Afonya" by Georgi Daneliya was an unexpected commercial success in the USSR. The main character, "Afonya" Borshev, is a plumber who spends his life partying with "buddies," many of whom he doesn't even remember after nights of heavy drinking. His wife abandons him, his boss places him on probation, and his entire life is falling apart, but he is unaware of it. Afonya met Katya at a dance club but didn't pay her much attention. But she is the only one who can save him... Daneliya achieves an excellent balance of satire and drama in this film. Quotes from the film became cult classics in the Soviet Union.
