YU Gwan-sun is imprisoned during Japanese colonial control for organizing the March 1 Movement, a peaceful demonstration for Korea's freedom. Undaunted, YU rallies her fellow convicts to oppose Japan. The Japanese security head detects the resistance, entices one inmate to discover who is behind it, and then tortures her. Later, Gwan-sun pretends to obey the Japanese while covertly plotting another independence rally. This movement expands from prison to the streets, and YU is subjected to horrible torture once more. Even though she dies two days before her release, her spirit is more emancipated and free than ever.
