Han van Meegeren, a young and accomplished artist in the early 1920s Amsterdam art scene, is a renegade. Critics dismiss his art as old-fashioned and label him a copycat since he paints in the style of his idols Rembrandt and Vermeer. He makes a fake Vermeer and attempts to pass it off as a real one just to show a point. It's effective. Rather than divulge the truth and shame the art community, he continues to profit from his numerous forgeries. His life quickly spirals out of control as he becomes entangled in a web of lies and deception. Then, one day, high-ranking Nazi Hermann Göring comes knocking at his home, asking for a Vermeer for his personal collection...
