Hillary Burns, 30, has spent her life trying to gain the approval of her parents, most notably her judgmental mother, Meredith Burns, with little success. Hillary's approval is contingent on her marrying the right man. That's why Hillary is overjoyed to be engaged to successful lawyer Jason King, whom she will bring home to meet the family for the first time in a week during their Thanksgiving get-together weekend. However, Hillary's life begins to unravel when she loses her part-time newspaper writing job when the newspaper folds, and Jason dumps her in order to focus on his career, which appears to be more important to him than Hillary. Hillary, on the advice of her best friend Sophie, decides she can't go home without Jason, especially since her two sisters' lives appear to meet their mother's approval...
