This is the story of three kind people: Paul Rivers, an ailing mathematician who is lovelessly married to an English émigré; Christina Peck, an upper-middle-class suburban housewife who is happily married and the mother of two little girls; and Jack Jordan, an ex-convict who has found the strength to raise a family in his Christian faith. They won't know each other until after the horrible event that will alter their lives and bring them together. By the time we get to the last scene, none of them will be the same because they will have been exposed to hard realities about love, faith, courage, desire, and guilt, as well as how chance may reshape our worlds in ways that are irreversible and permanent.
